Chagrin Valley Little Theatre opens its 96th Season with Puffs, or Seven Increasingly Eventful Years at a Certain School of Magic and Magic, by Matt Cox. This critically acclaimed play offers audiences a fresh and hilarious perspective on a familiar wizarding saga, focusing on the unsung heroes who just happened to be there too.
Puffs is a wry fanfic that delves into the world of a “certain school of magic and magic,” focusing on the Puffs, a group of well-meaning, loyal outsiders with a thing for badgers. This imaginative comedy reimagines a familiar tale from the viewpoint of three “potential heroes just trying to make it through a magic school that proves to be very dangerous for children”.
Praised by The New York Times as “A FAST-PACED ROMP through the ‘Seven Increasingly Eventful Years at a Certain School of Magic and Magic,’” “Puffs” promises continuous laughter, with Nerdist stating it “never goes more than a minute without a laugh”.
While a boy wizard may be busy conquering evil in the background, this is distinctly not his story. Instead, “Puffs” champions the underdogs wholly untouched by destiny. “At its core,” says director Daniel Hunsicker, “this story is about feeling like a background character in someone else’s adventure. It’s a story about finding your place and realizing the worth in your own contributions to the narrative.”
